How to see FreeStyle Libre 3 glucose on a Garmin watch

Libre 3 streams to your phone continuously, which makes the wrist view feel much closer to live than Libre 2 did. The setup path is the same, and it runs through LibreLinkUp.

Why the route looks the way it does

Libre 3 sends readings to LibreLink on your phone by itself, without scanning. LibreLink passes them to Abbott's cloud, and LibreLinkUp is the service Abbott provides for someone else to follow those values.

GGlance signs in to LibreLinkUp as that follower and puts the value on your watch. It never talks to the sensor, so anything that stops LibreLink from uploading also stops the watch.

Setup

  1. On your phone, make sure the LibreLink app is running and reading your sensor. This is what uploads your values, and nothing downstream works without it.
  2. In LibreLink, open Connected apps and turn on LibreLinkUp, then invite the account you want to follow with. That invitation is what makes readings visible outside your own phone.
  3. Accept the invitation in the LibreLinkUp app on the follower account, and check that you can see a reading there. If LibreLinkUp shows nothing, GGlance will show nothing.
  4. Install GGlance from the Connect IQ Store and add it as a glance or widget on your watch.
  5. In Garmin Connect, open the GGlance settings, choose FreeStyle Libre as your source, and enter the LibreLinkUp follower email and password.
  6. Open the glance on your watch. The first reading can take a minute, then it refreshes on its own.

Libre 3 specifics

  • Because Libre 3 streams continuously, new values appear roughly every minute in LibreLink, and GGlance picks them up on its next refresh.
  • Sensor warm-up still applies. During warm-up there is no value to show, and the watch will say so rather than invent one.
  • If you swap to a new sensor, nothing changes in GGlance. The follower link is to your account, not to a particular sensor.

Common questions

Is Libre 3 fresher on the watch than Libre 2?
Usually yes, because Libre 3 streams continuously to your phone rather than waiting for a scan. The remaining delay comes from the cloud hop and from how often Garmin lets a background app refresh.
Does this work with Libre 3 Plus?
If your sensor shares to LibreLinkUp, GGlance can read it. The route does not depend on the sensor model, only on LibreLinkUp having your values.
